How to become a Christian

Do you have an inner sense that there is something more to life? Do you feel as though there is something missing from your life?  Is there a yearning within you for something special, something wholesome and recreative, something extra to what you are currently feeling?

If you feel something like this then you are not alone.  You are experiencing the Spirit of God reaching out to you, as he has done already to so many of us.

There are many voices clamouring for our attention these days so it is important to listen to the right voice.  This right voice agrees in every way with the Christian Bible.

There we find the story of how God has touched the lives of men and women for thousands of years, and how he can touch your life this very day.

God wants everyone to find Him, to meet Him by faith and receive the assurance that they can be with Him for eternity.  And so he has clearly shown how to do this in the bible.

He says there that He is absolutely pure, perfect, righteous and holy. Because He is God He is also the creator of the universe, the sustainer of the universe, and totally present at all points in the universe - knowing all and seeing all.

In order to spend eternity with Him we have to become pure like He is.  Unfortunately, our predecessors, Adam and Eve, introduced sinfulness into this world system and tainted all humankind. They were placed on earth to live a life with the freedom of choice to worship and enjoy God forever. However, they were tempted by our enemy the devil, to take matters into their own hands, to be like God themselves, knowing good and evil.  Their eyes were opened, they lost their innocence, they discovered that good and evil were around, and now in themselves, but they no longer had the power to choose good. They became sinners, as has been all humankind since then.

Since Adam and Eve we have all had to struggle to make a living, struggle with pain and suffering, and struggle to be the good person we so want to be. The sin within us holds us back constantly from being all that we can be.  It can even enslave us, and nothing we do seems to master it or get rid of it.  There is only one solution.

The bible says that our sin has consequences. It has a price to pay. It leads to spiritual death.

In the most wonderful demonstration of love ever, God allowed His Son, Jesus Christ to take the punishment that our sin deserved.  His Son Jesus Christ came to earth, was born miraculously to a young virgin called Mary,  lived a sinless life for 33 years, told his friends and disciples all the ways of salvation, and then was murdered by the authorities.

The unique and amazing fact of history is that Jesus, as Son of God, was able to raise Himself from the dead on the third day.  This resurrection proved that He had the power to deal completely with sinfulness, to triumph over it.

He was a perfect sacrifice to pay for the sins of all mankind.  However, in order for this sacrifice to pay for your sins you have reorient your thinking.  You have to mentally accept that He did this for you personally. You have to accept that you are actually unable to save yourself, to be God yourself.  You have to do a complete turnaround in your thinking from living for yourself, to realise that God is calling you to live a life connected to Him.  In fact He wants to make you spiritually alive for the first time, to actually come into your personhood and live within you for eternity.

But you must ask His forgiveness for trying to live without Him, and invite Him to come into your heart, to save you.

If you do change your mind about living for yourself, living without God.  If you do entrust your hopes and aspirations to the wonderful God who created the universe, who loved you so much that He didn't spare His own Son, but offered Him up as a living sacrifice for you. If you commit to entering into a relationship with God as  the Supreme Authority for your life, then you will find your whole world change.

You will no longer feel like an orphan, a stranger, a wanderer in a confusing world. Your trust and faith in God, in The Lord Jesus Christ will let you know that you are now connected forever with God.  You will feel adopted into a new family, a citizen of heaven, and you will be correct.  You will be a new spiritual creation, like you have been born again.

It as simple as praying this heartfelt prayer which you would speak directly to God Himself.

"Dear Lord Jesus, please forgive me for trying to live life my way without You.  I turn away from doing it my way and invite You to come into my life as my Lord and Saviour.  I trust my future to You.  Please fill my life with your Holy Spirit that I may love and serve You forever."

If you pray this prayer then you will have started on a new way of living.  It will take the rest of your life to explore this way.  It will have many twists and turns in the journey.  Many will not understand what you have done and may in fact be antagonistic because they have not experienced it for themselves.

There are many many resources to help you understand, to help you live your life in the Christian way, to strengthen and help you.  The key ones are, the bible, the weekly gatherings of fellow believers at church, direct prayer to God, and Christian workers like Chaplains, Pastors and Youth Group leaders.

Please contact us through this website if you want to know more or receive any extra help.  Remember, you do not need to do this alone anymore.

How to Pray

Praying is not so much about technique as it is about relationship.  It is about communicating with a loved one. It is about you wanting to get a message through to God.  It starts with thought and intention.  The Holy Spirit can even interpret the deepest yearning, emotions and desires of our heart which we aren't able to put into words yet.

So just express to God what you really want to say.  Do it aloud.  Do it in your mind.  Do it by writing it down or acting it out.  Just get started, and in the going you will learn about praying.

God wants you to start where you are.  Be honest, open and sincere.  Express what you are really are thinking about and going through.

It is good to speak directly to Jesus Christ who is our representative to the Father, knowing that the Holy Spirit will get our message there.

As you are expressing yourself pay attention to what God may be saying back to you.  By talking things out you will find they become clearer in your mind, new understandings will come.  Some of these things will be God speaking to you.  God's messages will have a certain quality about them.  They will seem good, proper, right, pure, holy and enriching.

God answers prayers according to the principles laid down in the bible. The better you know the bible, the more likely you are to get the answers you expect.  God always answers, but only in ways that are in accordance with His purposes for your life and the life of others around you.  He also never removes human freedom from us.  There are consequences of actions and there is an amazing amount of badness and suffering which is not due to Him.  He is often more likely to give you power to cope with these consequences than to change them. If he removed all sin from the world overnight, then which of us would still be here at 1 minute past midnight?

So whatever is on your heart and mind is the place to start with prayer.  Talking it out with God is the best place to start.  Enjoy the conversation.

Where is God when I am hurt?

God is Spirit.  He created the universe, inhabits every part of it, is everywhere and sees all and knows all.

He set it all up to be a place of freedom, where humans could decide whether or not  to live in close relationship with Him.

The consequences of living without a proper relationship to God surround us every day. Not just us, but the whole creation groans with the pain of sinfulness.

This corrupt state of life on the planet gives rise to the suffering and hurt which we experience. God is not to blame for the things that go wrong. We did that ourselves.

One day he will remove all that pain and suffering.  He will create a new heaven and earth, but he is after something bigger first.  He is not willing that any should perish.  He wants all to have a chance to hear about His great love.  He wants all to have a chance to turn freely to the love He is offering us.  He wants us to have a free choice to return His love.  But if we can't say no.  If we don't have the negative option then we don't have a real choice.

God does not remove suffering, but rather comes to be with us in our suffering.  He helps us bear it, understand it, and draws us closer to him through it.  They say that the pain of childbearing and childrearing bonds us to our children.  Similarly, the pain of life in this fallen world is designed to teach us how to rely upon God's strength.  It is designed to grow us into better human beings, more loving people who through the power of God are able to transcend suffering, to think of God and others before self, to become purer and holier through overcoming suffering.

Where is God when I hurt?  He is right beside me, hoping I will turn to Him and draw resources and strength from Him by trusting that He knows what He is doing, that He wants me to grow more like Him, and that even if we lose the battle for life in this world, we have a sure hope of continuing our life with Him in the next life.
